Agricultural Forms from 33,000 feet.

As I was flying to and from Albuquerque this past week I saw some of the most amazing geometric patterns with grids and circles in West Texas. This is a gouache painting of a scene. Although contrived it is representative of what I saw.

Starbucks Pastel Drawing: Caught on a stop

Caught in a Stop
This Nupastel drawing was done on black paper at Starbucks on an outdoor table while I was having my Friday evening iced coffee. I drew it as if I had caught the action as the photographer had taken a photo at that instant with a strobe.

Thursday at the DMA Center for Creative Connections: Paper Sculpture

This week in the Center for Creative Connections we created sculptures from strips of extra thick poster board.
I built this horse head complete with ears of dual focus and star strip snip (face markings).

This is an archive from July 28 which I forgot to post:

Tonight we had a great project in C3 with visiting artist Margaret Meehan, creating soft sculptures with cheap teddy bears. I created this one which I called horse heaven based on a little horse angel l found in the stuffing of the soft toy.

Cutting Horse Drawings

This is a series of Cutting Horse action drawings. All but the first were done from a top view perspective from photos similar to the one represented in the first drawing. The first drawing was done from memory. All were based on images taken during the 2006 Summer Cutting Spectacular in Will Rogers Coliseum.

Lightning Storm - Natural Flash Photography

Tuesday night was quite stormy. With such frequent lightning I set my camera real slow (30sec) and aperture around f8 and got these photos by just clicking and letting the lightning make the photo - Natural Flash Photography

Stormy sunset sky

This is a study in 8x10 in Open Acrylic of a Stormy Sky at sunset. I am not sure If I am finished with it yet, I might add a foreground horizon feature. I was trying to take a cloud/landscape and make it in sort of a style reminiscent of a Rothko color field painting.

Update: This is a newer image after minor glazing changes.

Preparation for Painting

For the last month I have been thinking about an idea for painting. I had remembered a transparency I had taken in the late 70's and scanned into my computer late last year.
Here a graphite and Graphite/Watercolor pencil sketch I did Thursday afternoon.
Today I bought a 1/2 inch birch plywood panel and had cut into 3 pieces, one fitting a frame I already had. I then sanded and applied the first coat of gesso. A couple more and I will be ready to paint on it. I am still working on an idea on how I want this to go.

Pointillistic color field style painting

This is a cross between a pointillistic and color field study on black paper. I used gouache applied either direct from tube or mixed for secondary color. The subject is an imaginary landscape with sunset.

Today's Art Projects

I had two art adventures today. First I attended a Fast Sketching class led by Walt Davis who with Isabel Davis, wrote the book Exploring The Edges of Texas. I had a great time learning how to Sketch For Traveling at the Heritage Village of Dallas

After that was over I drove to the Dallas Museum of Art were Natalie Macellaio led a class in converting flat paper to sculpture. Here is my project:
