Gouache on masonite panel 9x12 This painting was started in a Dallas Museum of Art Painting workshop based on inspiration from Mayan Hieroglyphics. I reworked it the following day.

Just Noses

Another Starbucks series drawing entitled "Just Noses" based on an iPhone image taken of a herd of yearling colts.

This evening I did another one of my Starbucks series drawings. This time I worked on a Self Portrait with Yearlings from a cell phone image. I have included both an image at time of completing drawing and the resulting detail drawing. It might be the subject of a future acrylic.

Charcoal Drawings - High Brow Jackson Series

Here are a few Charcoal drawings I did of the High Brow Jackson over the last few weeks. They are both on about 9x9 drawing paper.

Gouache Study - High Brow Jackson

This is a gouache study from a photograph of High Brow Jackson that was in (but did not sell) the 2011 Futurity Sales 2YO sale. It is a 5x7 on watercolor paper which was started in pencil. I drew and painted this horse from a perspective a bit higher than the photograph was taken so had to make some adjustments, and had to come back and rework some passages to make it work better.

Cutting Horse Drawings

This is a series of Cutting Horse action drawings. All but the first were done from a top view perspective from photos similar to the one represented in the first drawing. The first drawing was done from memory. All were based on images taken during the 2006 Summer Cutting Spectacular in Will Rogers Coliseum.

Keeping The Pace
When the cattle are wild and run back and forth, you just have to keep the pace to keep them from slipping by and heading back to the herd. This sketch is from a photo I took during the 2004 Summer Spectacular of Bill Freeman riding Boon A Little.

3.5"x5" Oil Pastel on Ampersand Pastel Bord. The big challenge with these was depicting detail with such a broad stick of pastel.

Sketching in the Galleries: Remington and Russell at the Amon Carter Museum

Today I went to Ft Worth to first watch my niece ride in the Youth Cutting, and second to work on some horse drawing studies from Remington and Russell Paintings at the Amon Carter Museum. The top drawing was my first and I failed to note which painting it was from. I chose it because it is very similar to views I encounter when I photograph Cutting horses from the side.

This sketch is from one of the Amon Carter favorites by Frederick Remington entitled "His First Lesson."

The following sketches are done in pairs to get all of the action. Both are by Charles M Russell.

This sketch is from "Loops and Swift Horses are Surer than Lead." Click on the image to see a larger view of this pair of drawings.

This pair of drawings are from "Wild Horse Hunters." I chose this image because of the complicated postion of these horses. It seems to me that these complicated images are more easily drawn than the simple side views. Click on this image to see a larger view.

Equine Art: Watercolor and Guoache

Today I was experimenting with some pastel and watercolor for this image of Fantastic Cat. I have not yet finished the pastel, but went on to complete this watercolor sketch of the same image.

Cutting Horse Drawing

This is a study drawing I was doing this late afternoon using graphite, carbon and white pencil on brown paper. I have converted to B&W in this image.

Sketching In The Galleries: Chinese Polo Horse

Tonight our assignment was to a couple of sketches where we must go off the page on 3 sides. My first sketch was this Polo Horse Polo Horse tomb figure from from China dated between 618-907 AD. I drew this horse on brown paper with graphite and white prismacolor pencil.
