Equine Art: Drawing

This is drawing of Ascher Cat from the 2008 NCHA Futurity from a Photograph I took during the finals. The media is brown and black watercolor pencil on smooth bristol paper.

Pasture Visit: Most Recent Foals

This past Wednesday evening I went to the pasture with thought to gathering more drawing reference photos. The light was not was I was hoping for with clouds obscuring the setting sun. I settled on these two most recent foals. The foal to the left is a Dun Colt which was born in late June. The Buckskin filly below came in late May. I picked this unusual angle to photograph his filly so that she would be so that there would be nothing but sky behind her.

Sketching inthe Galleries at the Nasher: Volution

This week our DMA Sketching in the Galleries class went across the street to the Nasher Sculpture Center. Although we did several sketches, this green watercolor pencil on black paper was my favorite. The subject was a 1964 Painted Fiberglas Sculpture by Isaac Whitkin.

Sketchbook: Metallic Cat

This drawing was done from a photograph taken of Metallic Cat keeping up with a cow as it ran across the working area during the 2008 Futurity Finals. I drew this with a black watercolor pencil on Bristol Smooth paper.

Dallas Arts District Museum Block Party

Friday night I went to the Late Nights Art District Block Party where the Dallas Museum of Art, The Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Crow Collection of Asian Art were all open late. I first visited the American Galleries where I had seen the evening before a great shadow play on the walls with the George Washington Sculpture.
I then went to the Nasher Sculpture Center where I found another great shadow display with David Smiths' "The Forest" on the travertine walls.
I then photographed these two views of the Jonathan Borofsky Sculpture "Walking to the Sky."

One of my favorites at the Nasher is this Giant Steel Sculpture by Richard Serra. When the museum is not crowded you can walk inside between these two curved slabs of steel. I found this narrow frame of a skyscraper as I looked up.



After Dark there was European Music (Tre Versi) which you might hear in the Sidewalk Cafes of Paris.

Sketching in the Galleries: Remington and Russell at the Amon Carter Museum

Today I went to Ft Worth to first watch my niece ride in the Youth Cutting, and second to work on some horse drawing studies from Remington and Russell Paintings at the Amon Carter Museum. The top drawing was my first and I failed to note which painting it was from. I chose it because it is very similar to views I encounter when I photograph Cutting horses from the side.

This sketch is from one of the Amon Carter favorites by Frederick Remington entitled "His First Lesson."

The following sketches are done in pairs to get all of the action. Both are by Charles M Russell.

This sketch is from "Loops and Swift Horses are Surer than Lead." Click on the image to see a larger view of this pair of drawings.

This pair of drawings are from "Wild Horse Hunters." I chose this image because of the complicated postion of these horses. It seems to me that these complicated images are more easily drawn than the simple side views. Click on this image to see a larger view.

Equine Art: Watercolor and Guoache

Today I was experimenting with some pastel and watercolor for this image of Fantastic Cat. I have not yet finished the pastel, but went on to complete this watercolor sketch of the same image.

New Dun Colt and two Inquisitive Vizslas

On Sunday, July 5, I brought my camera so that I could get a photo of the last and most recent foal born at the ranch. I had brought them into the roundpen to get them out of the hot sun.

While I was in the roundpen the two Vizsla dogs were not to happy that I had excluded them from the fun and were doing everything they could to get in. You will find a short photographic story in this Gallery.

NCHA Day Cutting

I was experimenting with an image this weekend for a possible drawing or pastel. In order to match the size of the paper I created an 12x18 image. The cow was added from another image and background softened. The rider is Callie Oatman on Kudos Debutante.

Sketching in the Galleries - Turkish Horse II

This week I sketched the Turkish Horse bronze again, this time from a lower back view. The media is carbon and white pencil on brown card stock.

Sketching in the Galleries - Old in front of New

Our assignment this week was to sketch a figure in the European gallery and then move to the a new installation of contemporary art and create a background. In the new composition we would be placing old in front of new. I chose the Bugler by Manet, and placed in in front of an abstract distemper painting by Peter Doig. For this project I used a medium gray paper, white, carbon and Sanguine pencil.

Storm Clouds Brewing

As I was returning home from the laundry this evening I noticed a billowy texture in coming storm clouds. As soon as I arrived I rushed to get a photo of these storm clouds.

This past Saturday there were many storm clouds in the evening that offered an excellent opportunity to capture some of my favorite subject: Cloudscapes. A selection of my images from last Saturday may be found in this gallery.

Sketching at the Nasher: Hepworth Monolith

This past Thursdays' Sketching classs was held at the Nasher Sculpture Garden. Our instructions were to tone our paper with charcoal or Conte and then draw our chosen sculpture using an eraser for highlighting.

Memorial Day Weekend

After I posted those last images we had two new arrivals.


This is Rocket. She is by Going to the Doc and is destined to be a Barrel Racer.


This filly is by Doc O Lena Twist. She has a name but I don't yet have it.

This is Remy, a young Vizsla dog. He was on alert being around all the mares the walk down to the lower pasture. You can see more of these foals photos in this gallery.

Foal Fun II

These two colts are living in the front pasture.

All of the outside foals are at least a month old, with two pairs, two colts in the front pasture and a colt and filly in the back pasture. The foals have now buddied up and are having lots of evening fun. You can see some of the fun in this Gallery.

Sketching in the Galleries - Inside Outside

This week we first went to the African Galleries and chose two different objects and drew the basic contour of the object. We then went the European Galleries and filled the contour shapes first within the contour on one sheet, and then on the outside of the contour on the other.



Within the Inside shape I chose a an impressionist painting of men sharpening their hay scythes. The shapes of the scythe fit the shape I was filling. For the outside contour I chose a portrait showing the eye and nose within the opening in the shape.

Sketching in the Galleries: Silver and Reflectivity

This week we were in the European Silver Gallery drawing reflective subjects. I chose this bowl because it did not have lots of textural surfaces. I was working on the drawing the specular nature and the reflections from the surfaces. This is also a continuation of an experiment with drawing white on black. I felt this was the perfect media for this project.
