The project for this past Thursday night was to integrate 2D and 3D. We were sketching in the Japanese/Chinese Decorative Art Galleries. I chose this pair of vases from the 19th century Meijing Period. I used my favorite light and dark sketching technique. I believe that these vases depict Mt Fuji. They were on a pedestal with one forward and the other back closer to the wall.
This drawing was done in the George Segal Exhibit at the Nasher on March 19. I thought that this scene was very similar to that depicted in Edward Hopper's Nighthawks in both subject and character.
This sketch was done in the European Galleries on March 12. Our assignment was to integrate multiple 2d Artwork into one. All of the paintings I chose were on the same section in the gallery. The children in the foreground are in a painting entitled "The Lesson." A Manet Painting entitled "The Bugler" is in the background, as is the portrait to the left.
This is the first filly at the Ranch for 2009. She was born last Monday morning and is already giving her dam fits as she tries to keep up with a real runner. She was quite curious about the camera and came over quite close (too close to focus) to see what I was all about. She is living in the lower pasture with 5 other mares and geldings, none of whom dare approach. One mare approaches the photographer to divert some of the attention away from the foal.
This pastel on toned ground is of homeless man plaster cast at the George Segal Street People Exhibit at the Nasher Sculpture Center. This exhibit is a wonderful collection of lifesized plaster and bronze figures in their environment. Most of these sculptures are from other collections, however a grouping entitled "After Rush Hour" is part of the Nasher Collection, and I had drawn this a little over a year ago in the Sculpture Garden.
Both of these life size sculptures as well as others on both floors of the Nasher Sculpture Center were modeled after the Sculptor and his friends. This exhibit continues until April 5, 2009.
I started this dish by sauteing some white chopped onion and diced pork country style rib. When pork was mostly cooked I added sliced mushroom and cooked until it was just about cooked, and then added some baby spinach. I continued cooking until it was tender and then put the contents in a glass dish (coated with non-stick spray) over 4 corn tortillas. I then poured 2/3 can of Hatch Green Chili Enchilada Sauce over the mixture and then topped with 4 more corn tortillas. I poured the remaining enchilada sauce over the top and then topped with shredded Mexican style cheese and added shredded broiler roasted Anaheim chili. I baked this in the oven for 30 minutes.
These are the annual litter of Austrias Vizsla's . This litter was born Jan 7 and is not 4 weeks old. Today I brought the Viszla Puppies into the yard to play. I picked out a feisty male to be my photo model. I let him run around and play while I just kept taking photos. The top image is my favorite of the series. Supper time and Eight is enough, but there were ten. 2 had to share another bowl with mom.
This evening our teacher did not show up so we had an opportunity for a free choice night of sketching. I returned to a familiar small sculpture of a Turkish Horse in the European Galleries drawing on brown paper with sepia and white pencils.
Today I had a second Opportunity to photograph two draft horses. This is a photo of Las Vegas, a Belgian draft horse as we had finished our shoot for the day and were returning to the trailer. I liked this image of his eye looking back at me as he was being led away.
Thursday nights at the DMA part of my weekly routine. There is always Jazz in the Atrium featuring a different musical group each week. After coffee I make a quick tour to find any changes. The American Galleries 20th Century most recently underwent a reinstallation, with some paintings being put on vacation and others changing location. 
Tonight we went to the Early American Galleries with the assignment to draw furniture. We were draw either two drawings, or to continue with the same drawing after a mid-session review. We started with the goal to accurately deal with perspective issues. After the review we were assigned the task of accurately showing the texture of the surfaces were were drawing. After the review I continued the same drawing, working more on the wood grain and adding shadows.
I finished by giving the wardrobe a sense of space, dealing with adjecent shadows and adding the candle table casting the shadow on its side. This wardrobe is from Fayatte Count Texas, manufactured the 1860-70's of cedar. The cabinet and drawer panels are painted.

Blossom is the only weanling from the 2008 Breeding year. She has been a bit skittish and difficult to catch, but is now learning how to hold still while I lock the lead rope onto her halter. I have been taking her out to the arena or outdoor roundpen to run around. Today when I took her out to the arena I decided it would be neat to take some photos of her running from one end of the arena to the other. When It was time to move her out of the arena I was able to walk up to her, visit a few minutes, and then clip on the lead rope.

While I was editing my Horse Sale photos I had a pot of this Tuscan Soup on the Stove. This is not my recipe, but one sent to me by my Mom. It is very simple and easy to prepare. Brown 1 lb of Bulk Italian Sausage in your skillet. Add 4 cups of water and several cut up potatoes and cook potatoes until you can break them up. Add 1/2 bunch of Kale Greens cut into strips.
