Ginger kohlrabi Stir Fry

This is an all vegetable dish. Peel and coarsely grate one or more kohlrabi into a bowl. Coarsely grate a carrot into the same bowl. Finely grate some fresh ginger over vegetables. (optional: add some dry Chinese chilis to taste) Stir fry this vegetable mixture in whatever oil you prefer. I used olive oil and a little butter.

Vizsla Puppies

This past Weekend one of my ranch duties was feeding 10 Vizla puppies. This is half of the litter chowing down. They are about 4 weeks old in these photos.


After supper it was time for some roughhousing. Looks like one puppy is about to start something.

Cooking: Bison Chili

Tonights recipe was Bison Chili. I started by cooking a slice of bacon in my iron skillet. I then added and browned ground bison. After the Bison was about half cooked I added diced white onion. When the onion and ground meat were all cooked I added a can of crushed tomato, water, grated garlic, and a little bit of leftover yellow corn. I also added a little salt to taste. I cooked the chili until it had thickened. I then served over Texmati Rice with avocado slices.

Sketching in The Galleries

This month our instructor is an Art Professor from UNT who teaches figure drawing. This drawing is a gestural line drawing where I was working on maintaining scale, proportion and spatial relationships of this Giocametti Sculpture.

The Texas Cutting Futurity

I just spent the last week in Waco, Texas photographing the Texas Cutting Futurity. I am now back in Dallas looking toward 2-3 weeks of print sales and image management after the show. The Open Futurity Champion was Arc Cat Her Please. Boyd Rice scored a 224. Additonal photos may be found at www.texasfuturityinc.com

During a break I took a photo of myself with my camera at my station for photographing the event.

Sketchbook: Suspended Power

Tonight was my regular Sketching in the Galleries night. The assignment tonight was to find a painting in the American Section and draw part of the painting that stood alone as an independent composition. I chose the Turbine in Charles Scheelers' Suspended Power.

Corn and Green Chili Waffle Parmesian

This morning I made another "Non-Sweet" Waffle Breakfast. This time I used a mixture of green chili and corn I had prepared for cornbread and added it to a mult-grain pancake/waffle mix. I also added some diced Bernier black olives.
I topped this waffle with bacon, 2 eggs (yolks broken but not scrambled), and topped with parmesian cheese and baked in a 350 degree oven til egg was cooked.

Texas Cutting Futurity

Next week (Oct 30-Nov 5) I will be photographing the Texas Cutting Futurity at the H.O.T. Dodge Arena in Waco, Texas. The photo above is from last years event. Last year the days were 22 hours long. More days were added this year so hopefully we will be done at a reasonable hour each evening and trainers will have an opportunity to work their NCHA Futurity Horses on fresh cows. The Charcoal drawing below is drawn from the photo above.

Sketchbook: Cutting Horse I

Graphite on Bristol Board 9x12. This drawing was done under the influence of starbucks caffeine LOL. It was drawn from photo of horse being shown on cattle during the EE Ranches Production Sale.

In the Kitchen: Waffle Chili Relleno

First I prepared a Waffle with Bernier garlic black olive (3 diced)
into the mix.



I cooked and drained Applewood Bacon and blistered and peeled an Anaheim (or Hatch) green chili.


Then I topped the Olive Waffle with the Bacon and stripped chili.
I then poured the scrambled egg and then green enchilada sauce over the waffle.

Then I topped with a mexican blend of cheese.

And finally I baked in oven at 350 degrees until done.

Sketchbook: Afternoon at Starbucks

This afternoon while doing the laundry I went to my neighborhood Starbucks to draw. I had purchased a set of Pitts India Ink brush pens and wanted to give then a try. I started with some of my horsey images but those were not working for me. Instead I decided to sketch the interior of the Starbucks I was in. This is more of learning sketch than anything. It seemed to work so I decided to go ahead and post it.

Cooking: Oktoberfest

Cook some Westfalia Bratwurst in water and a slice of applewood bacon with red onion.

















Add some good quality german mustard.





Add the cooked and sliced german sausage to the bacon and red onion.













Add the best saurkraut you can buy to the skillet.

Finally open an authentic Oktoberfest beer.

Sketchbook: Eggplant

Today I went to the Big Asel Art Supply Garage Sale at The Contemporary on Swiss Ave. in Dallas. I met friend and we shopped for art supplies, tried out some products including some oil paint on paper, and got few free samples of painting board. I brought home a set of India Ink drawing brush pens which I hope to try out soon. On my way home I made a slight detour and stopped at Central Market where I found this nearly perfect eggplant. In our sketching class last night we practiced with using a blending tool (tortillions) on our drawings. I was going to post it but after I drew this eggplant I thought this was a better representation than what I drew in class.

Sketchbook: More Sliding Stops

This past weekend I photographed the Texas Legends Production Sale at the Waggoner Ranch Whiteface Line Camp near Electra, Texas. During this sale I had the opportunity to photograph some great horses some of which had training in Reining. The photograph above is montage of 5 of the best stopping slides I photographed from different points of view. In a continuing effort to get the drawings right I have selected the top right slide and the sketch for this is in the image below.

Sketchbook: Sliding Stop Study

Well here is a replacement drawing for that last one (already removed) that really did not work as I had thought it did. This is a charcoal of the two views of same reiner in a stopping slide.

Saturday evening in the horse pastures

Saturday evening I decided to go prospect for drawing ideas. I took my camera into the front pasture and took some photo from ground level of the the two mares eating their alfalfa. Well, my being on the ground really caught the attention of Cedar, the Thoroughbred mare and she just had to come over and see what I was doing.


She was still partially focused on her mare friend who just might be finishing off the last of the Alfalfa.





Next I moved down the hill to the broodmare pasture. There I met up with this weanling. I took a variety of photos but this one of her getting a drink was more interesting to me than some others I already had many of.


As darkness was encroaching I noticed that the gelding in the adjoining pasture had come over to see what all the commotion was about in the mares pasture.

Cooking: An Orange Cauliflower

I went to the grocery tonight and found this orange cauliflower. I was so intrigued that decided to bring it home for supper. Of course before I could cook it, I had to photograph it first. I am not sure how I will cook it, perhaps like faux mashed potatoes?

Sketchbook: Reiner in a slide

This is a preliminary pencil drawing of a reining horse in a sliding stop.
I will soon follow with a charcoal version of this same drawing. This drawing is from a photograph taken at the Western Bloodstock APHA Sale this past July. Below is the photo in composite, the same reiner in slide in two different views.

Sketchbook: Thursday Night at the DMA

The assignment for Thursday Night was to draw a very reflective object utilizing high contrast techniques and drawing shapes and letting the drawing develop from them. I chose a silver pitcher and after lightiling mapping in the pitcher, drew the shapes within the subject respecting the contours of the pitcher. After I got home I photographed the drawing and came back in photoshop and highlighted the brightest shapes in the pitcher.

EE Ranches Breeders Production Sale

This past Thursday and Friday I was photographing the EE Ranches Breeders Production Sale in Whitesboro, Texas. The evening of Sept 21 there was a Stallion Parade for folks to see the EE Ranches Reference Sires out of their stalls. The photo to the upper left shows Laker Doc as he walked by. The lower right photo shows Laker Showtime (Laker Doc x Peppys Punkin Par x Peppy San) being demonstrated on cows as he was auctioned in the sale.


This is a charcoal drawing of Laker Doc based on the photo in the upper left.

Foundation Quarter Horse Registry Roundup and Review

This past Thursday the Foundation Quarter Horse Registr y held their first annual Round-up and Review show at the Oklahoma State Fair. The Amateur Versatility Champion was Miss King Wimpess shown by Mindy Costello. In order to win this award Miss King Wimpess had to earn the the highest number of points in all the classes offered. The first class was Cutting. The following images show a selection of images from the show. Additional classes were Ranch Riding, RAnch Sorting, Ranch Feedlot Sorting, Barrels and Poles.

Arabian Horse Show and OKC State Fair Horse Shows

This past Thursday and Friday I photographed The State Fair of Texas Arabian Horse Show on contract for the official photographer. I don't yet have a photo but will post when I have one available. At this show I was photographing riding classes of all types including Western Pleasure, Hunter, Hunter Hack, English and Country Pleasure and Reining. The country pleasure is one of the most interesting with the rider dress and horse gait styles. The most difficult gait to catch is the country pleasure trot or extended trot when the outside leg is up high forming a sort of backwards "C".

Next Wednesday I head to Oklahoma City for the State Fair Oklahoma Foundation and AQHA Shows. I will keep you posted on this as I have more info.

Labor Day: In the Kitchen

Todays recipe was Hot Chipolte Pork Stirfry with Khlorabi, Carrots, Sweet Onion, and Hatch Green Chili. The recipe is shown in photos on this web page. 1) Peel and cut Khlorabi into small sticks, 2) Peel and cut the carrots into small sticks, 3) Fry and peel Hatch or Anaheim Chili, 4)Cube Pork, 5) Cook Pork, 5)Add diced onion 6) Add Carrots and cook some more, 6) Ad add Kholrabi and Chili strips and keep cooking, 6)Add Fisher and Weiser Hot Plum Chipolte Sauce when all vegetables are cooked 6) Serve over rice.

Digital Art: Fasig-Tipton Horse Sale

Yesterday I created a new collage similar to the one in Tuesday's post, only focusing on the Auction Ring at the Fasig-Tipton Summer Yearling Sale. Today I experimented around with some of the photoshop art actions. This image is the result of that experimentation.

Fasig-Tipton Summer Yearling Sale: Day 2

Today was the final day of the Fasig-Tipton Summer Yearling Sale. Our sale topper of the day was a Catastrophe x Satin Shoes colt which sold for $100,000. The conformation photo of this colt is in the upper right of this sale collage. The overall sale topping yearling is shown in the lower left photo. The other images are typical scenes at a Fasig-Tipton Texas Sale.

Fasig-Tipton Texas Summer Yearling Sale: Day 1

Today I was photographing the Texas Fasig-Tipton Texas Sale in Grand Prairie at the Sales Pavillion at Lone Star Park. This was day one of a two day sale with 439 horses cataloged. The sale topper of the day was City At Peace (Hip 67), a bay filly by Include out of City Hideaway. This filly sold for $140,000 to Dapple Bloodstock located in Lexington KY.
